Nelson Chamisa Commends Gwanda Mayor For Installing Street Lights

MOVEMENT for Democratic Change-Alliance president Nelson Chamisa has applauded Gwanda Mayor, Jastone Mazhale (MDC-A) for installing street lights along the highway leading to locations along the spot where people were being mugged.
Addressing thousands of party supporters who thronged Phelandaba stadium on Sunday, Chamisa urged leaders linked to his party to shy away from corruption and to work for the development of the country.
“We don’t want corrupt leaders but straightforward leaders who focus on development. Residential stands must be allocated on merit not clandestinely and in a corrupt manner. We want to see the installation of street lights because Gwanda must be a smart city and not a city of darkness,” said Chamisa.
However, some people who live in Gwanda said the mayor was taking credit for something he had not done.
Sikhumbuzo Nare said the street lighting project had been on the cards for years.
“We are just giving credit to the wrong person. This project was planned decades ago and only came to fruition last week because council got a partner,” said Nare.
Mayor Mazhale told VoteWatch263 that the project was a step in the right direction because the community would get to see the money they were levied put to good use.
“The lighting project will boost the confidence of the residents about the street lighting levy which they are paying. It will also promote investment and in that way, our town can also be marketed,” he said.
Gwanda Town Engineer, Phakamile Ndebele said Council would in future install solar-powered as a cost-cutting measure.
